About the course
The Mathison Park Disc Golf Course is a newly unveiled 18-hole layout that weaves its way through the beautiful, undulating landscape surrounding the serene Lake Hyland in Churchill. This course is more than just a place to play; it’s an immersive outdoor experience that caters to players of all skill levels, from absolute beginners to seasoned disc golf veterans, while showcasing one of the region’s most beloved natural assets.
Developed in collaboration with the Latrobe City Council and championed by community health initiatives like VicHealth, this project transforms a picturesque parkland into a dynamic, accessible sporting facility. The course's creation is a testament to a shared vision for promoting physical activity, community engagement, and appreciation for the natural environment.
The 18-hole layout was created by course designer Andrew Ferguson. Andrew's goal was to craft a balanced, challenging, and incredibly fun track that integrates seamlessly with the existing topography of Mathison Park. The design cleverly utilizes the natural features—dense eucalypts, open parkland, and strategic elevation changes—to ensure that no two holes feel the same, providing a comprehensive test of distance, accuracy, and tactical play.
The course features two distinct par ratings: an Amateur Par of 59 and an Advanced Par of 54, encouraging players to set personal goals and track their progression. With a total distance of 1562 metres, the course provides plenty of opportunities for powerful drives and technical upshots alike.
The flow of the course is intuitive, guiding players around the lake and through various environmental zones. For those looking for a quicker round, the course offers a designated Quick Nine Loop, which combines holes 1 through 6, 11, 12 & providing an exciting, abbreviated round without sacrificing the quality of play.
Community Roots and Local Support
The success of the Mathison Park project is deeply rooted in the dedicated local community. We extend immense gratitude to Latrobe City Council and VicHealth for their crucial financial support and commitment to enhancing public recreation facilities. Their investment ensures that this world-class disc golf experience is freely accessible to all residents and visitors.
Furthermore, the course owes a great deal to the tireless efforts of the local working group, the Friends of Mathison Park. This passionate collective of volunteers has been instrumental in advocating for the course, assisting with planning, and ensuring the development aligns with the park's environmental values. Their ongoing support for maintenance and promotion ensures the course remains in pristine condition for years to come.
Disc Hire: If you don't have discs or are traveling light, you can easily obtain equipment locally. Disc hire is available at the Latrobe Leisure Morwell Service Desk from Latrobe Shire Council, Morwell, located on Commercial Road, during business hours.
The Mathison Park Disc Golf Course offers a challenging, beautiful, and rewarding experience that truly captures the spirit of the game in a stunning natural setting. Whether you are aiming for the Advanced Par 54 or simply enjoying a relaxing walk around Lake Hyland, this course is a must-play destination.

History
The Mathison Park Disc Golf Course is the culmination of a dedicated, two-year project guided by course designer Andrew Ferguson. His involvement began with a thorough site assessment across the wider Latrobe City Council area, a crucial phase to identify the ideal location for a premier 18-hole course that would maximise the region's natural beauty and accessibility. Andrew ultimately selected Mathison Park, recognising the unique potential of the terrain around Lake Hyland. His design integrates the park's challenging elevation and established tree lines, resulting in an 18-hole layout that not only provides a diverse and technical disc golf experience but also perfectly showcases the stunning natural environment, making it a proud and enduring asset for the community, developed with the support of Latrobe City Council, VicHealth, and the Friends of Mathison Park.
