History of Åkeslund DiscGolfCenter
Nils Olsson is the Swedish business owner and disc golfer who founded Åkeslund DiscGolfCenter. As many serious players do, he dreamed of one day creating his own disc golf course. What made Olsson's fantasizing a bit different was that he knew exactly where the course would go, and he didn't need anyone's permission to build it. He could use a large plot of rural property in Hörby that belonged to his family and offered, woods, fields, and even a few water features.
The location also seemed good for a destination, play-all-day sort of course as Hörby is about an hour's drive outside of Sweden's third-largest city, Malmö, and an hour and a half from Copenhagen, Denmark, which is home to one the world's busiest disc golf courses.
"I had wanted to create something of my own for a long time, something unique," Olsson said. "The idea to create the course was born during the summer of 2021."
Since he had the land and was willing to pay for equipment, landscaping, and installation himself, it didn't take long to put that idea into action. Olsson sent an email to a designer and together they planned out 18 holes over the winter of 2021.
As soon as he could, Olsson got to work creating them. He intended the course to be an aspect of his company, so in order to test the viability of the concept, he opened up Åkeslund DiscGolfCenter to the public with just nine holes in July 2022.
"Which was super good because I got a lot of positive feedback and energy to keep up the project," Olsson said.
Those positive vibes were important for Olsson, who didn't fully realize the amount of effort that would go into creating a premium disc golf experience.
"It has been enormously educational," Olsson said of building the course. "If I had known that it was so much work from the beginning, I might not have considered starting the project. But after starting the project I have had so many memorable moments of friends and family joining me in building the course. Then there is always the anticipation and hype of playing the holes for the first time with your friends!"
Åkeslund's full 18 holes became available to all in May 2023, but Olsson doesn't believe the work is anywhere near finished. He said he's "always looking for ways to improve the course" and tries to learn from great design elements at other courses. By keeping up this spirit of constant refinement, he believes his facility can hit his primary targets.
"My goal for Åkeslund DiscGolfCenter is to deliver a high quality course without it being too expensive to play," Olsson said. "I am a player myself and want to create the top-notch experience that I would want to have when I visit a disc golf course. My biggest focus is the visitor experience, giving groups of friends the chance to spend a great day together at Åkeslund."
How Hard Is Åkeslund DiscGolfCenter?
Åkeslund DiscGolfCenter currently has two layouts. Both are likely to be enjoyed the most by fairly experienced disc golfers though an ambitious beginner may enjoy the "Gul Kort" ("Yellow Short") layout. Here's how those two layouts stack up in terms of difficulty, distance, and more.
Name | Distance |
Technicality | Overall Difficulty | Par Rating | Scoring Average | |
Easiest Layout | Blå Lång | Long | Technical | Challenging | 186 | +4 |
Hardest Layout | Gul Kort | Long | Technical | Challenging | 222 | +12 |

What's It Like to Play at Åkeslund DiscGolfCenter?
Olsson wants players to use a variety of discs as they traverse fairways that often move from open to wooded areas (or vice versa) over a single hole.
"The design idea has always been to try to differentiate the holes and force the disc golfer to use as many different discs during the full course as possible," Olsson explained. "I especially try to avoid letting the disc golfer use the same disc twice on the same hole. I like to use the woods to my advantage, creating technically difficult moments by designing the course in and out of the woods."
Though Olsson hopes his course can provide a fun time for all skill levels, experienced disc golfers are most likely to enjoy its many technical holes and copious out-of-bounds (OB) lines more than absolute beginners. That said, the course rewards accuracy and finesse over huge power most of the time. A par 60 course coming in at 7,146 feet/2,178 meters in total, Åkeslund's hardest 18 holes demand precise throws well under 300 feet/92 meters on average for players to earn tap-in birdies. It has just two par 3s over 350 feet/107 meters.
Along with offering a diverse set of holes that are challenging without feeling daunting, Olsson wants Åkeslund to create a special atmosphere where disc golfers feel at home.
"It is not only the 18 holes, it is the nature around the whole Åkeslund DiscGolfCenter and the walks between the holes that should be a nice experience," Olsson said. "I want to show the area in the best way possible for somebody that has never been here before, and the disc golfers that have been here plenty of times should always feel that it is a practical and well maintained course."
